November 18, 2024 – The Bahamas Present a Junkanoo Costume to Manneken Pis to Celebrate 51 Years of Diplomatic Relations 🇧🇸🇧🇪

On November 18, 2024 , as part of the 51st anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Belgium and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, a unique event was held in Brussels. The iconic Manneken Pis was presented with a vibrant Junkanoo costume, representing the rich cultural heritage of the Bahamas.

A meaningful cultural exchange

The ceremony, held at City Hall on the Grand Place, honored a centuries-old diplomatic tradition: the exchange of cultural gifts. By offering the Junkanoo costume, the Bahamas not only celebrated its independence but also strengthened its ties with Belgium.

🎭 Junkanoo , inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2023, is a signature festival in the Bahamas. This costume, titled "Ooh Ooh Junkanoo," embodies the creativity, craftsmanship, and history of this country. Its vibrant colors, feathers, and ornaments tell stories of identity, heritage, and community.

During the event, HE Ambassador Cheryl Bazard recalled the importance of cultural exchanges in diplomacy.
