The Republic of Moldova is an Eastern European country located between Romania and Ukraine. A former republic of the Soviet Union that gained independence in 1991, the country has been engaged in a process of rapprochement with the European Union for several years.

Chișinău, the capital, is the country's main political, economic, and cultural center. Moldova is known for its important wine-growing tradition, its rural landscapes, and its cultural heritage marked by Romanian and Slavic influences.
